Emma suffered a concussion late one night while at dance class. She recollects that she "realized I had a concussion immediately." The next few days she developed symptoms of frequent headaches, inability to stay asleep, memory loss, and light sensitivity. Emma returned back to dance a month later, and hadn't shown any signs and symptoms of a concussion since.

FAQs

How long will it take to go back to school?

Depending on the severity of the injury, age of the patient, and previous brain traumas will affect the recovery process. Each patient is asked to perform for 45 minutes to an hour symptom free before returning to school. The patient can return back to school with symptoms lingering. However, returning to school does not mean the patient can return to play.

How long will it take to return back to a sport?

Returning back to play will require more than returning back to school. The patient must be symptom free, and complete the return to play. The patient must also be cleared by a physician.

What are the symptoms of a concussion?

Headache, difficulty concentrating, easily confused, slowed thinking, difficult memory recollection, nausea, fatigue, lack of energy, dizziness, poor balance, lightheadedness, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, irregular pupil contraction/ dilation, ringing of the ear, poor sleep, mood changes, or aggression.

How many concussions can a patient have before stopping a sport or activity?

There is no magic number when to stop participating in an activity. A physician will determine the extent of each concussion, rank them, and further evaluate past concussions. The medical team will collaborate and determine the physical contact required for each activity also.
